  2021 OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE SECOND-TEAM (COACHES): QB - Geremy Hickbottom, Tennessee State,...Hickbottom finished the season with 1,847 yards passing with 12 touchdowns. He had a QB rating of 134.46 on 140-of-243 passes with a 57.61 completion rating. Not only was Hickbottom a threat in the air, but he also did it on the ground with 401 gained yards and seven touchdowns. His longest run from scrimmage was 65 yards and dazzled the crowd with three rushing touchdowns at Homecoming in a 27-21 win over Murray State. It was Hickbottom that broke the tie with 1:41 left to play as he scrambled out of the pocket and spun around a defender to the end zone. Hickbottom finished with 150+ yards passed in seven games and had a stretch of four games with 250+ yards passed.   Draylen Ellis passed for 345 yards and four touchdowns - all four of them to freshman Drae McCray - and Austin Peay breezed to a 48-20 victory over Tennessee Tech on Saturday. Ellis and McCray connected for a 73-yard score just 24 seconds into the second quarter and then hooked up for a 22-yard TD with 5 seconds left before halftime as the Governors (6-5, 4-2 Ohio Valley Conference) took a 24-13 lead into intermission. Ellis hit McCray for a 36-yard TD - the only score of the third quarter - and found him again for a 47-yard TD just 51 seconds into the final quarter for a 38-13 lead. Ellis completed 16 of 27 passes for Austin Peay. McCray finished with seven catches for 237 yards. Ahmaad Tanner ran for 93 yards and two scores on 13 carries. Davis Shanley was 22-of-36 passing for 231 yards with a TD and two interceptions for the Golden Eagles (3-8, 1-5).   Draylen Ellis passed for two touchdowns, ran for another and Austin Peay blanked Tennessee State 36-7 on Saturday. The Governors (5-5, 3-2 Ohio Valley Conference), who made six interceptions in a 42-26 win over Eastern Illinois last week and came into this game with an FCS-best 15 picks, had two more against the Tigers (5-5, 3-3). Austin Peay was denied its first shutout since September 2018 when Chayil Garnett threw a 6-yard score to Zaire Thornton with six seconds left. However, the victory did avenge a 24-22 loss on Oct. 2 to the Tigers. The first game didn't count in the conference standings. Ellis threw TD passes of 51 yards to Baniko Harley and 50 yards to Eugene Minter.   Johnathon Edwards had three of Austin Peay's school-record-tying six interceptions and the Governors beat Eastern Illinois 42-26 on Saturday. Edwards interceptions all came in the first half, two leading to touchdowns and a 28-20 edge at halftime. Draylen Ellis threw touchdown passes 43, 33 and 59 yards, the latter coming in the third quarter for a 14-point lead that the Governors (4-5, 2-2 Ohio Valley Conference) extended to 41-20 on Brian Snead's 10-yard TD run - two plays after a pick by Perry Aaron.

Ellis finished 11 of 22 for 278 yards and three touchdowns. Drae McCray had 137 yards receiving and two scores and Eugene Minter 132 yards with one TD. Snead had two TD runs. Edwards has six interceptions this season along with two fumble recoveries. Shamari Simmons had the other two Austin Peay interceptions Saturday. The six picks tied a school record last reached against Kentucky Wesleyan in 2001, also the last time a Governors player had three picks. The individual record is four. Austin Peay has 15 interceptions this season. The Governors weren't immune to turnovers with an interception and two lost fumbles against the Panthers (1-9, 1-4), who lost their fifth straight game.   Geremy Hickbottom ran for 104 yards and three touchdowns on just nine carries - adding a TD pass - and Tennessee State rallied after blowing a 21-point lead to beat Murray State 27-21 in Ohio Valley Conference play on Saturday. Hickbottom's 8-yard TD run with 3:50 left in the second quarter was the only score in the first half. Hickbottom had a 65-yard scoring run before connecting with Josh Trueheart for a 24-yard TD and a 21-0 lead for the Tigers (5-3, 3-1) with 8:04 left in the third quarter. Preston Rice got the Racers (3-5, 0-3) untracked with a 6-yard TD run with 2:09 remaining in the quarter to cut their deficit to 21-7. Damonta Witherspoon scored on a 4-yard run and Rice connected with LaMarte Brooks for a 54-yard TD on first down to knot the score at 21 with 4:30 left in the game. Hickbottom's game-winning score came on a 7-yard run with 1:41 remaining, capping an eight-play, 62-yard drive. Hickbottom completed 17 of 29 passes for 159 yards.   Geremy Hickbottom rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another to help Tennessee State beat Eastern Illinois 28-0 on Saturday for its first three-game winning streak since 2017. It was also Tennessee State's first shutout in an Ohio Valley Conference game since 2013. The Tennessee State defense took advantage of four turnovers. James Green, Josh Green and Eddie Graham each made an interception, and Davoan Hawkins forced a fumble. Green returned his 47 yards before getting tackled at the 2, and Graham made his in the end zone. Hickbottom was 14 of 24 for 161 yards, and he carried it eight times for 38 yards for Tennessee State (4-3, 2-1). Devon Starling rushed for 122 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.   Dayron Johnson scored on a 13-yard catch in overtime, Cory Rahman intercepted Willie Miller in the end zone on fourth down and Tennessee State beat Tennessee Tech 20-13 on Saturday, giving first-year coach Eddie George back-to-back victories. Its the first time Tennessee State (3-3, 2-1 Ohio Valley Conference) has won consecutive games in five seasons. Tight end Rodell Rahmaan caught a short pass in the flat from Geremy Hickbottom and raced 56 yards into the end zone for TSU's first touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Rahmaan also had a 37-yard grab with 1:56 remaining, setting up a 24-yard field goal by Antonio Zita to tie the game. Hickbottom was 20 of 34 for 256 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Rahmaan finished with four catches for 106 yards. Miller threw for 126 yards with one touchdown and one pick for Tennessee Tech (2-5, 1-2).   Geremy Hickbottom accounted for all three Tennessee State touchdowns and the Tigers stopped a 2-point conversion attempt late in the fourth quarter to defeat Austin Peay 24-22 on Saturday night. All three of Hickbottom's touchdowns came from long distance. He had a 63-yard hookup with Rodell Rahmaan, ran 48 yards for a score, then hit Rahmaan for 45 yards, all in the second half.

The second touchdown to Rahmaan gave the Tigers a 24-16 lead with 5:33 left in the game. Austin Peay responded with a seven-play, 75-yard drive culminated by a 16-yard touchdown pass from Draylen Ellis to Baniko Harley. After the 2-point try failed, Austin Peay forced a punt but did not cross midfield on its final possession. Hickbottom completed 18 of 34 passes for 301 yards, Devon Starling rushed for 120 yards and Rahmaan caught five passes for 129 yards for the Tigers (2-3, 1-1 Ohio Valley Conference).   SEPT 20 OVC CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Draylen Ellis, QB, 6-0, 175, So., Olive Branch, Miss., Austin Peay,...Ellis completed 21-of-36 passes for a career-high 350 yards and three touchdowns as Austin Peay topped Morehead State 59-35. He also rushed for 30 yards on seven carries and did not take a sack. Ellis also completed passes to eight different receivers before leaving the game early in the fourth quarter. Overall APSU finished the game with 381 passing yards, the fourth-highest total in school history.   Geremy Hickbottom threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Tennessee State gave coach Eddie George his first victory, defeating Division II-member Kentucky State 41-7 on Saturday. The game was played at Nashville's Nissan Stadium, where George starred as a running back for the NFL's Tennessee Titans. Hickbottom completed 15 of 25 passes for 264 yards, with the three touchdowns and one interception. Devon Starling gained 142 yards rushing on 23 attempts for the Tigers (1-2). Tennessee State's Rodell Rahmaan caught two touchdown passes, the second a 46-yard catch-and-run after blocking a punt on the previous play. Kentucky State (1-2) entered the game averaging 211 yards rushing but was held to 84 yards on 31 attempts.   Draylen Ellis passed for 345 yards and three touchdowns and Austin Peay rolled to a 59-35 victory over Morehead State in nonconference play on Saturday. Ellis put the Governors (2-1) on top for good midway through the first quarter - connecting with Eugene Minter for a 17-yard score and adding a two-point conversion pass for an 8-0 lead. Morehead State (1-2) pulled within two points with 1:36 left in the first on Issiah Aguero's 1-yard run. Jack McDonald's 30-yard pick-6 stretched Austin Peay's lead to 15-6 just 1:31 into the second quarter. Ellis added a 26-yard scoring strike to Minter and Ahmaad Tanner scored on a 26-yard run to put the Governors up 28-6 at halftime.

Ellis' final TD pass was a 34-yarder to Baniko Harley in the third quarter. Ellis completed 21 of 36 passes. Tanner added a 1-yard scoring run in the final quarter and finished with 83 yards on 17 carries. Backup QB Neyland Jean got in on the scoring with a 31-yard TD toss to Trey Goodman with 5:40 left to play. Jevon Jackson ended the scoring for Austin Peay on a 1-yard TD run with 2:06 remaining. Mark Pappas completed 21 of 51 passes for 230 yards with one TD - a 6-yarder to BJ Byrd in the third quarter - and two interceptions for the Eagles. Chance Harris added a 2-yard TD run in the final period.   Former Auburn quarterback Chayil Garnett is changing his stripes. Garnett, who entered the transfer portal last month, announced Monday afternoon that he has committed to Tennessee State, where he will play for new Tigers head coach Eddie George, the former Heisman Trophy winner out of Ohio State and longtime NFL running back. A former three-star prospect who signed with Auburn's 2020 class -- the last full class under former coach Gus Malzahn -- Garnett will have four years of eligibility remaining at Tennessee State. The 6-foot-1, 216-pounder out of Lakeland, Fla., did not appear in a game last season for Auburn and redshirted while working behind Bo Nix, Grant Loy and Cord Sandberg. - Birmingham News

  One of Auburn's young quarterbacks is leaving the program. Redshirt freshman Chayil Garnett entered the NCAA transfer portal Monday, AL.com has learned. Garnett was seemingly fourth on the Tigers' quarterback depth chart behind Bo Nix, Grant Loy and freshman Dematrius Davis.   Central Michigan football offensive lineman Romello Tarver entered the NCAA transfer portal on Jan. 14. Tony Paul of The Detroit News first reported Tarver's intent to transfer. Tarver, a redshirt sophomore from Delray Beach, Florida, never appeared in a game for the Chippewas. After a redshirt season in 2018, he underwent knee surgery and missed the entire 2019 season.
